Grading Policy Homework Policy
My grading policy is simple; ones overall grade will be broken down into 6 categories :
1. Homework 10% 2. Quizzes 15% 3. Test: 20% 4. Classwork 15% 5. Habits of Work 20% 6. Projects 20% 1. Homework: Also known as practice is an important part of student academic growth. Homework will make up 10% of your total grade. Please see homework policy for a more in-depth review of homework expectations. 2. Quizzes: Quizzes are quick assessments designed to see how we are doing in class. Students will be quizzed at least once a week and will cover material from that weeks lesson. Quizzes may include multiple choice, short answer, and or matching. If you would like to make up a quiz, you may either during a lunch period or after school provided you can get a ride home or have permission to walk/take city bus. 3. Tests: A unit test will be given toward the end of each unit and will cover material from the entire semester. Tests may consist of multiple choice, vocabulary, matching, short answer, and extended response questions. If you would like to make up a test, you may either do it during your lunch period or after school provided you can get a ride home or have permission to walk/take city bus. The make up test will be slightly different from the original. 4. Classwork: The work we do in class is important and requires everyone working together (collaboration) in order to accomplish our class objectives. Class work will be broken into attendance, participation, and preparedness, and group work. Attendance is mandatory for all classes, for if you are not in class you have no opportunity to participate. If you are late you MUST have a pass otherwise you will be marked absent or tardy . Bathroom breaks will be held to a minimum as we have a lot of material to cover and discuss and if you are constantly leaving to use the restroom, your ability to participate and be involved in the discussion becomes hindered. Group Work: There are times when I will ask you to work together with your classmates to solve problems or answer questions. This is not time to talk with friends or goof around. Each member of the group will be asked to self assess and evaluate the group’s ability to accomplish established goals. Students will be evaluated based on their ability to work together, ability to stay on task, ability to maintain a stress free environment, and their ability to accomplish assigned task. 5. Habits of Work: Here at Brennan Rogers we believe in providing students with structures and supports designed to help students succeed. As a result, how a student works and prepares is as important as how they actually scored. Students will be assessed weekly on several criteria that demonstrates how the student is working toward meeting their learning objective. 6. Projects: As we are an expeditionary learning school each semester we will engage in some kind of research project. These projects are designed to take place both during class time as well as at home. Students will need access to computers, encyclopedias, arts and crafts supplies, access to library, etc… All projects will be announced well in advance and will have check in days with both student and parents. Thank you for taking the time to read through the grading policy. Mr. Merritt Attendance

Homework serves an important purpose in a students education.
Homework is practice for the skills we are working on in class. Anyone, who wants to get better at anything, needs to practice in order to improve. Whether you are playing a sport, performing in a concert, or taking a district assessment, the best way to do your best is to practice every day. The more you practice, the more you will improve. As such homework will be given out at least twice a week. (This means that some weeks you will have 2 homework assignments while other weeks you may get four. It all depends on how much we can accomplish in class.) Not all homework assignments will be due the next class period so please pay close attention to the Due date. Any and all homework is to be turned in on the date it is due during your assigned class time. (Do Not try to turn in homework during Crew or some other random time) If you are absent, feel free to email me from you nhps.net account @ [email protected] to see if there is something you can do from home. You can also check google classroom or our class website under the homework section. https://mrmerrittsocialstudies.weebly.com/ If you do not have access to email or you can’t complete the task because it is something you missed, during the lunch period of the day you return to school, come to me so that you can get whatever makeup work you missed. You will have 48 hours from the time you return to school to makeup the missed assignment(s) without losing credit for tardiness. Most homework assignments will receive two grades. The first grade will be on a scale of 0- 2.5- 5 In order to receive a 5
In order to receive a 2.5
In order to receive a 0
The second grade you will get for homework is based on accuracy. Below are things you will be graded on for your homework assignments: Did you answer the question correctly? How well did you complete the task? Is your sentence structure and grammar appropriate? Did you meet the basic requirements (complete in blue or black ink/pencil, did you write your name and class section?) Important: Copying is cheating and will not be accepted. If it is determined that two papers look exactly the same then a meeting will be held to discuss the similarities with students and parents. You will then be given a make up assignment that must be completed. If it occurs again both students will fail the assignment. Copying does not only mean using your classmates work as your own but also extends to the internet. Asking google and copying whatever answer google gives you is a form of cheating called plagiarism. This is when you take credit for someone else’s work. Therefore if you are going to use someone else’s work then you will need to give credit to that person. If you are unsure how to properly cite (give credit), pay close attention during class. Action plan:
I do, however; reserve the right to implement more homework if I feel as though class time is being wasted and students are unproductive. The additional homework assignments are to ensure we cover all the materials needed. THE CHOICE IS YOURS! Thank you for taking the time to read through the grading policy. Mr. Merritt Materials
